your story as well!
Send a story, Get a
t-shirt! This newsletter is about you,
and we want to hear your stories! Stories with
names, faces, and a photo with a glimpse and mention of
a DSPL product! Photos should be 4"x6" x 100dpi
(min), with a description of somewhere
between 50-200 words, more or less. Don't
worry about style, we can polish it up if needed, and
you'll see it before it goes out. You can see the
DSPL t-shirt styles at our

Meet the
Team: Jeff Webster,
Production
|
Jeff
was born in San Diego, but grew up on the islands of Oahu and
Hawaii. After attending Konawaena High School in Kona, Hawaii,
Jeff served for four years in the U.S. Army as an infantryman
and helicopter mechanic. During his tour of duty,
he was stationed in Hawaii and Kentucky.
Jeff
joined the DeepSea production team in 2004. In addition
to expertly building DeepSea products, Jeff operates the
manufacturing pressure test facility, verifying the integrity
of products before they ship. In his off hours, Jeff
enjoys art, especially the use of color pencils and
watercolors. The images that emerge from his hand often
portray an idyllic Pacific island life in a variety of
intriguing styles.
You can see samples of Jeff's
artistic work at http://www.deepsea.com/Jeffsart.html

Dimming
Option Now Available for Low-voltage LED Multi-SeaLite® Matrix
and LED Mini-SeaLite®
|
The
new LED Multi-SeaLite® Matrix is available with either a high
voltage AC/DC driver or a low voltage DC driver. The LED
Mini-SeaLite® is available with only a low voltage DC
driver. Either light's low voltage DC driver is now
available with a smooth flicker-free constant current dimming
control using a 0-5vdc analog control line.

SeaBattery™
Awarded ABS Type Approval
|
This is good news.
Thanks to the encouragement of Bill Crowley, Cal Dive, (New
Iberia, Louisiana), and months of effort between DeepSea and
ABS, offshore projects that require ABS Type Approved
underwater batteries can now be handled with one phone
call. DeepSea Power & Light®'s SeaBattery® is now
ABS Type Approved for use at sea on projects requiring ABS
certification. They are the only pressure compensated
battery with the ABS Type Approval
designation.
In addition to the new ABS
applications, SeaBattery has shown its capacity for daring
exploit by freefalling to the bottom of the Tonga Trench, more
than 35,000-ft, as part of an autonomous ocean trench research
vehicle, then free ascending on a return trip to the
surface. The OceanLab Hadal Lander is operated by the
University of Aberdeen OceanLab (Newburgh, Scotland), directed
by Dr. Alan Jamieson, Research Fellow. The Hadal
Lander is powered by a single 12-volt, 28-Ah SeaBattery
that provides 12 hours of autonomous operation. Further
information on the Hadal Lander is found in the story,
"Imaging Deep-Sea Life Beyond the Abyssal Zone," which
appeared in Sea Technology, March 2009, pp
41-46. For further information, visit our website

Undersea
Voyager Project Dives Lake Tahoe, Lands in USA
Today
|
Scott Cassell, Founder and Chief Submersible Pilot of the
Undersea Voyager Project (UVP), led a team of submarine
explorers to Lake Tahoe to study lake pollution, survey
earthquake faults, and hunt for ancient submerged trees that
grew as long as 3000 years ago during a period of great
drought. Though the submersible was limited to 150-ft of
Tahoe's 1,645-ft depth, it transited a combined 100 miles of
bottom landscape during its many dives. Scott
says "I used DSP&L lights and camera for several live
sub-to-surface broadcasts including to a local news station,
Good Day Sacramento and FOX news. The live feed concept from
the UVP mission is a success and will be an integral part of
what is to come. And what is coming is going to be
BIG!" More on the UVP Tahoe

17-inch
glass sphere tested in DeepSea's 20-inch Pressure
Chamber
|
A team of deep ocean biologists
from Scripps Institution of Oceanography/UCSD directed by Dr.
Douglas Bartlett, recently tested a 17-inch Vitrovex 9km-rated
sphere with multiple feedthroughs in DeepSea Power &
Light's 20-inch pressure chamber.
The sphere was
being qualified for operation in the Puerto Rico Trench, where
depths can reach 8400m. The sphere was successfully
taken to 12,750-psi, equivalent to 8750m. The sphere is
part of a free vehicle that gathers 60-liter water samples
from the benthic boundary layer 2m above the trench
floor.
A secondary module can collect surface
sediments for further microbial studies. "The test was
particularly useful in confirming the integrity of the sphere
which experienced some minor spalling during its deployment to
8400m last year," said the researchers. "DeepSea was very
helpful in getting our project in on short notice, and built
the frame to hold the sphere in the chamber.
One
of our team was present to witness the test. The chamber
operator followed our requested pressurization and
depressurization schedule quite closely."

Nice
Comments about DSPL
|
|
1.
DSPL's article "Ocean Engineering 101-Anodizing" (Ocean News
& Technology, April/May 2009), prompted Scott Bentley,
President, VideoRay, to forward it to all members of his
management and engineering teams with the comment, "This is an
excellent article - please consider it mandatory reading and
reference material." See a reprint of the story
on-line at DeepSea's website under "Technical
Library."
2. DSPL supported the 10th
International Sub Races (ISR) with underwater video cameras
and cables. Carderock Test Basin's Peter Congedo, who
helped ISR event organizers, said "Thank you for the
underwater cameras you provided. The images they are
collecting are being streamed live to DOD sites around the
world. The race closes today, new world records were set, and
this race was a complete success thanks in large part to you
folks. Attendees included many students, engineers, two
shuttle astronauts, and various local and national networks.
The DeepSea banner was displayed next to the press booth.
Thanks again. You run one very classy
company."
3. Customer Support: Rodger
Martin, a PE at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard was reviewing their
in-house procedures for handling SeaBatteries. A few questions
came up, and Kevin Hardy and Pedram Pebdani jumped in to sort
them out. Rodger wrote back, saying in part,
"Kevin/Pedram, thanks again ... You two have been very
helpful. Pictures definitely did the trick!!! I'm
talking with another fellow in San Diego. ... <He> has
also spoken with a few folks at DeepSea and has been very
pleased with the assistance you guys have provided.
Great to experience this and to hear our folks in San Diego
are experiencing the same!!! Talk to you soon.
Thanks again for the pictures."

Polaris
Sailing Club
|
|
DSPL's Kevin Hardy
was invited to speak by Ms. Alva Shaefer, Program Chair for
San Diego's Polaris Sailing and Power Boat Club. The
presentation, titled "Underwater Lights: From Titanic to
Friday Evening," illustrated the wide variety of underwater
lights made by DeepSea Power & Light, from manned
submersibles to small boat thru-hull lights. Kevin
pointed out the same care and attention to detail is put into
every light made at DeepSea. The PowerPoint presentation
opened the audience's eyes to the possibilities of Thru-Hull
SeaLites®, and the light demonstrations had them
squinting. Interesting questions were asked, including
appropriate models of Thru-Hull SeaLites® for sail boats,
which have to contend with compound curves. The audience was
very engaged, and invited Kevin to return for a second
presentation.
