DeepSea Power & Light has contributed to a peer-reviewed paper published in Volume 19 of the Journal of Ocean Technology, “Sensing the Ocean: Lights, Cameras, Sensors.” The paper, “Autonomous, Fixed-Focus, High-Resolution Deep-Sea Camera Systems,” details the development of subsea camera systems specially designed to capture deep-ocean processes for science, exploration, and education.

The optical system is the result of a close collaboration between DeepSea Power & Light, Woods Hole Oceanographic’s MISO Facility, EP Oceanographic and Ocean Imaging Systems, and Back-Bone Gear. With a unique design enabling scientists to document deep ocean phenomena with minimal operator intervention, the camera has been used and continues to be used in ongoing research efforts and helps to inform the public about the importance of the deep oceans.

The paper also includes an overview of the history of deep-sea imaging along with stunning imagery captured by the camera system. It is available to read in full at the Journal’s digital issue here: https://issuu.com/journaloceantechnology/docs/e_jot_v19n3_interactive_book/74.
